Tango Vadio is a DIY queer tango project, originally based in Portugal. It is from nature experimental, constantly under-construction and gender-neutral.

Tango Vadio is about creating a safe place for people of all identities and walks of life, trying to get rid of discriminatory behaviour by creating an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere for *ALL*. Therefore it is a a safe place for people and pairs of all genders, and the gender of the dancer is decoupled from the role in the dance.

We believes in making place for freedom and poetry, in creativity, and pushing them into everyday life, reclaiming them, not in a distant future, but today already. It is about fun, smiling and learning. Join us!

The workshop is organized in such a way that all the participants (even from different levels, like absolute beginners or already wanting to improve something) may still learn plenty of new things.

-Workshop is held in English, by Emma Leminen

-For pairs and people of all (really!) genders (m, f, trans* ..)

-Possible to take part without a dance partner

-If you have dance shoes you may bring them. Otherwise, some socks will do the trick.

Tango Vadio, Lisbon, August

We are back!

First we will stretch our muscles, brain-cells and stilletos learning intensely about Tango in a queer environment at the Queer Tango Festival and now we will be back in Lisbon. We had severe difficulties in finding a (new) apropriate ballroom to dance with you. But it looks like this time we made it!

Queer Tango Festival, Berlin (en)

We are so much going!
We will be at the Queer Tango Festival, in Berlin! and we can hardly - argh - wait!

for those thinking of joining, we, Gloria Badcock and Emma Leminen, will be there sweating and wasting our red stilletos and combat boots, learning and dancing at the queer Milongas like there would be no tomorrow. Yes. We will be there. For if we want to teach and broadcast queer tango, one has to keep learning. And that is just great!

Tango Vadio goes Abroad (en)

After a quite long hibernation, Tango Vadio wakes up and stretches hir muscles in order to prepare the sluttiest possible comeback to the dance-floors.

This time we got a very nice invitation, impossible to refuse, to contribute to the SM-Dykes Conference, in Manchester, a very queer and, as the name says, sex-positive event, for women and trans*. We will present an introduction to tango workshop and DJ in one of the parties. Everything in the usual gender-queer perspective. Complete program is here.

We have currently no plans for Lisbon or Portugal, as we are currently undergoing a readjustment to feedback received and brainstorming phase. But we would very much welcome any concrete proposals from your side, which would get us immediately spinning some ochos with you on the dance floor.

we continue to welcome (And thank you for) all your suggestions, feedback or even contribution to the project. Moreover, we are still very open to suggestions of dance-floors or other spaces which could host Tango Vadio events, and where we could exercise our special way to tango with you.

New poster for Tango Vadio

One year as elapsed, no matter how slutty one can be, time to change our looks. There is a new poster, slutier than ever, for your eyes' and senses' pleasure. I added also the toner-friendly version of it, for those of you so kind to print it and distribute it and hang it around! Lot's of love and gratitude to you, then! Yes, we autograph those posters on request!

Wiki: KnowTango

www.knowtango.com is another wiki for tango events. Personally, I find this one quite easy to use, compared to others (I will post them here as soon as I find the bookmarks again :-P).

Like in any wiki, anyone can view, add, or edit events, and there is an embeded map funtion.

It is an easy, central place to find out about all the tango events happening in the tango-vadio community and everywhere else worldwide. The site is totally free to use with no ads whatsoever, so it's truly meant to be a global resource by and for the tango community.

Next Tango Vadio?

We still don't know when the next Tango Vadio event will be. Probably it will take place in the next two months.

It will likely be in Lisbon, because of practical reasons and the critical mass effect, but it is not a must. In fact, we are desperate to find a lame excuse to perform in Porto again, or any other city where a group (doesn't have to be huge) of interested people gathers, and hit the road again.

What Tango Vadio is (english)

Tango Vadio can be translated (not really successfully) as slutty, sloppy or drag tango. The name an homage to "Fado Vadio", an event in which fado is expontaneously sung without caring too much for anything else besides art in itself. It was this expontaneous nature of such events, and the focusing on the essential - wanting to tango - which we wanted to express in the choice of our name.

Tango Vadio is a tango promotion project in Portugal. It is a very new project, experimental, very under construction, and sees itself as queer and gender neutral, which means a safe place for people and pairs of ALL GENDERS (man, woman, trans*, and all combinations...).

Tango Vadio is a not regular event. All dates and places of the next events will be published in this mailing list (or write to tango.vadio [at] gmail [point] com for more information).

The workshop is organized in such a way that all the participants (even from different levels, like absolute beginners or already wanting to improve something) may still learn plenty of new things. The tango session will allow any participant to be able to "shine", be a milonga queen/ king/joker/all! After our workshop you will slide the dance floor as it had sex-lube on it.

The objective of the project is the introduction of Tango Argentino in Portugal in a queer and gender neutral fashion. This means that not only the workshops are open to people of all genders, and the combinatory possibilities among them, but also that the gender of the dancer should not play a role in the dance itself. In other words, let´s have Tango without gender clichées... We use the concept of safe place, where all identities should be able to feel confortable, and no discriminatory or agressive behaviour can be tolerated, gender clichées included...

We, Tango Vadio, believe that there are more genders than male and female. We believe that a lot of combinations can take place (not only) for dancing, according to taste, inclination or simply the phase of the Moon, and we believe in creating freedom, poetry and creativity, and pushing them into everyday life.

Who we are (team)

Tango Vadio is mainly Glória Badcock (organisation, concept, contacts and getting nervous), the teachers Emma Leminem and Andrea, and Rui (helping organizing, promote, or simply dancing at workshops) as permanent members. Other non-permanent members have been helping, or are available to, inclusively other teachers who can cooperate every once in a while or when seen convenient. Tango Vadio is not a closed team. Tango Vadio, like any stray dog, also gets a lot of undeserved support and suggestions from respective families and friends, not to mention a small but steady fan club).

Glória Badcock Badcock can't dance to save her life, but she is trying hard to learn it, getting whatever remains of her ego and vanity pulverized in the process. She likes to organize stuff, has been busy channeling her bad temper in the LGBT rights, gender and poly activist scene. Prejudices, traditional roles, and sentences like "tango is to be danced exclusively by a man and a woman (with the man leading, of course)" make her fret in a quite dangerous way. But behind all that steam beats an almost-human heart, and she has a weakness for watching people dancing, sharing romantic and sexy moments and just being happy. So one day she just founded the Tango Vadio project as cultural project with gender-activist aspect, in a day where her attention span was better than usual...

Emma is simply danceaolic (even if not belonging yet to the dançaolicos group) and she is incapable of surviving without three tango fixes every week. No matter what! She studied practical and theoretical Dance, including Dance Anthropology, Pedagogy, Physiology, History and so on, but also Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Creative Dance, tap-dance, Folk Dance, and Drama. She has an extensive and proven experience in teaching, and has been teaching Tango in Finland, where Finnish Tango is has become a strong national musical expression. Besides all of these passions, Emma believes there is gold around you, if you choose to see it. She will help you with that choice and that process. You may find her "diving" into interesting performative projects helping giving them sense. She will help you go and find it.

Andrea, teaches Tango Argentino, in Berlin, where she lives, for more than 12 years now. This teaching includes individual, group and workshop lessons (e.g. Queer Tango Festival). Besides doing tango-related artistic performances on stage with the duo TangoSchlampen (see, e.g., this video), she has also a keen interest in Standard and Latin ballroom dances., and was already European champion for Standard in her category a couple of times (rankings and results here: http://www.essda.eu/results/results.htm.

Rui likes to dance, is very much interested in the political (gender neutral) and activist aspect of the project, is very fond of the rest of the team, and helps in everything in a project he finds interesting and socially useful. So he does a bit of everything, from organization, then to promotion, to ruthless criticism. Dancing he does too!
